Make a difference with a rewarding career in fostering

Are you ready to change lives, including your own? At Next Stage for Fostering, we see fostering as more than just a short-term role, it can be a long-term professional career. With the right guidance, training and financial support, fostering can be a life-changing experience that brings both personal and professional rewards.

Why choose fostering as a career

Fostering offers a unique, fulfilling opportunity to build a meaningful career. It is about making a real impact, offering stability and support to children who need it most, and helping them grow and develop in a nurturing home. Fostering as a career gives you the chance to shape the future of a child while gaining valuable skills and the personal and professional satisfaction of doing something truly valuable.

Fostering as a family-friendly career

Fostering is a professional career that offers flexibility around your lifestyle and personal commitments. As a foster carer, you have the freedom to work from home while making a meaningful difference in a child or young person’s life. Unlike traditional jobs, fostering requires a 24/7 commitment. You will need to be available to meet the needs of the child(ren), for example, school runs, leisure activities, health appointments, as well as occupying children during school holidays.  You will also need to be able to attend meetings about the child and attend meetings and training to support your personal and professional development.

Fostering can also complement family life, whether you have children of your own or are looking to start a family. Many foster carers find that the experience enriches their family dynamic, bringing them closer together. Fostering as a career allows for a flexible balance between professional responsibilities and family life.

Financial support and allowances

Fostering allowances are made up of 2 parts. The first part is designed to cover the costs of caring for a child, including essentials such as food, clothing, leisure activities, birthday and Christmas presents.

The second part is payment for the foster carer in recognition that fostering is a career and foster carers require an income. Foster Carers are classed as self-employed, and there are generous tax allowances to support the income earned from fostering.

As a foster carer, you benefit from a £19,360 tax exemption. In addition, you receive further tax relief per child, ranging from £405 to £485 per week, depending on the age of the child.  You are also entitled to the £12,570 personal tax allowance, provided it has not been used in any other employment. This means that, in total, you may only start paying tax on earnings above £52,990 or £57,150, depending on the age of the child in your care.

Additionally, foster carers may qualify for National Insurance credits, which contribute towards their State Pension. For more information on financial support for foster carers, visit our allowance page or visit the UK Government website.
